Slavery in Athens should not be perceived as the despotic slavery of ancient Eastern civilizations. The Athenians owned slaves of the domestic type, that is, patriarchal slavery flourished in the policies. Often patriarchal slaves were members of a large family, as well as meteki – immigrants from other regions of Greece. Do not forget that the Greeks highly valued work and did not have an all-encompassing culture of laziness, as evidenced by Hesiod’s work “Works and Days”. In general, the Greeks could do the same work as their slaves.
