The tulip has a basic cup shape, from which the petals radiate out to the sides. The plant began to grow in the 13th century, but it really became popular in the 1600s when Turkish traders introduced it to the Dutch. In the 17th century, the tulip became so widespread that the bulbs were sold as currency, and the theft of flowers was punishable by severe penalties. Tulip bulbs are now available and inexpensive.
