Chemically, salt is an ionic compound, as it is made up of two oppositely charged ions, such as sodium chloride, sodium ions (cation) and chloride ions (anion). Cations and anions have opposite charges, so they are attracted to each other using an electrostatic force of attraction called ionic bonding. The same amount of opposite charges makes ionic compounds neutral without charge.
Salts are crystalline, hard and brittle solids. Due to the presence of ions, they are a good conductor of heat and electricity in the molten state and in solutions. But they are insulators in solid states, since the ions are not free to move. A solution of ionic compounds is an electrolyte.
