Write down the equations of the reaction occurring on the electrodes during the electrolysis of a solution of sodium idide salt.

During the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium iodide, we will have cathodic hydrogen evolution and two competitive electrode anodic reactions, oxygen evolution from water and iodine from iodide ions. The near-cathode layer will have an alkaline reaction through the OH (-) hydroxyl groups. Free iodine will be released in the anode space, which is more beneficial than oxygen evolution under these conditions:

At the cathode: 2H2O + 2e = H2 + 2OH (-)

At the anode: 2I (-) -2e = I2

The total electrode response will be:

NaI + H2O = NaOH + H2 + I2
