Write down the oxide formulas: Cu (OH) 2, CuOH, Fe (OH) 3, Fe (OH) 2, NaOH

In order to correctly write the oxide formula, we need to know the oxidation state of the element that was part of the hydroxide, respectively. Considering that the OH – group always has an oxidation state of 1, we have:

Cu (OH) 2 – if OH has an oxidation state of – 1, then Cu will have + 2 (the charges, as it were, should neutralize each other);

CuOH – for Cu, the oxidation state is + 1;

Fe (OH) 3 – Fe has an oxidation state of + 3;

Fe (OH) 2 – + 2 for Fe;

NaOH – + 1 for Na;

Knowing also that oxygen in oxides has a constant oxidation state of 2, we get oxides:

CuO; Cu2O; Fe2O3; FeO; Na2O.
