2. Phosphorus oxide dissolves in water to form tetra-metaphosphoric acid:
P4O10 + 2H2O = (HPO3) 4.
When boiled, acid decomposes:
(HPO3) 4 + 4H2O = 4H3PO4.
3. Reaction of phosphoric acid with an excess of alkali:
Н3РО4 + 3NaOH = Na3PO4 + 3H2O.
The reaction proceeds in stages:
NaH2PO4 => Na2HPO4 => Na3PO4.
