The rights and obligations of free citizens of the Greek city states were closely interrelated. Often, the right was both an obligation and vice versa.

The duties of the residents of the policy included:

With the help of laws adopted by the National Assembly, the rights of citizens were protected and the fulfillment of their duties was controlled.
