The main component of granite is feldspar. Both plagioclase feldspar and alkaline feldspar are usually abundant in it, and their relative abundance served as the basis for the classification of granites.
Rocks containing less than 20% quartz are almost never called granite, and rocks containing more than 20% (by volume) dark or ferromagnetic minerals are also rarely called granite. Minor essential minerals of granite may include muscovite, biotite, amphibole, or pyroxene.
