Write the equations: barium chloride + sulfuric acid – barium sulfate + hydrochloric acid
June 24, 2021 | education
| Consider the reaction of barium chloride and sulfuric acid.
When the reaction is carried out in solution, the following interaction occurs:
BaCl2 + H2SO4 = BaSO4 ↓ + 2HCl.
Complete ionic equation:
Ba2+ + 2CI– + 2H+ + SO42- = BaSO4↓ + 2CI– + 2H+.
Abbreviated ionic equation:
Ba2+ + SO42- = BaSO4↓.
Barium sulfate precipitates into a white precipitate.
When dry barium chloride and concentrated sulfuric acid are used, hydrogen chloride leaves the reaction as a gas:
BaCl2 (solid) + H2SO4 (conc.) = BaSO4 ↓ + 2HCl ↑.
