Phoenician seafarers were the earliest of all to travel across the basin of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, on the shores of which they founded many colonies. Some of these colonies eventually gained independence from Phenicia. But the largest, richest and most powerful of them became Carthage, a Phoenician colony in northern Africa. Carthage quickly became one of the most prominent Mediterranean ports and had already colonized all the major islands and also areas in mainland Europe. It was founded at the beginning of the ninth century BC.
