| Potassium is oxidized by atmospheric oxygen under normal conditions. to oxide:
4 K + O2 = 2 K2O
Potassium oxide reacts with water to form an alkali – potassium hydroxide:
K2O + H2O = 2 KOH
Carbonic acid reacts with potassium hydroxide to form potassium carbonate and water (neutralization reaction):
2 KOH + H2CO3 = K2CO3 + 2 H2O
