Write the reaction equations: CaC2 – C2H2- H2C = CH2- CH2Cl-CH2Cl- C2H2- CO2

CaC2 -> C2H2 -> H2C = CH2 -> CH2Cl-CH2Cl -> C2H2 -> CO2

1) Add water to calcium carbide (CaC2) and get acetylene (C2H2) and calcium hydroxide – Ca (OH) 2:

CaC2 + 2 H2O → CH Ξ CH + Ca (OH) 2

2) Add hydrogen to acetylene and get ethylene (C2H4):

CH Ξ CH + H2 → CH2 = CH2

3) We chlorinate ethylene, we get 1,2 – dichloroethane (С2Н4Cl2)

CH2 = CH2 + C l2 → CH2Cl-CH2Cl

4) To obtain acetylene (C2H2), add sodium metal to 1,2 – dichloroethane:

CH2Cl-CH2Cl +2 Na → CH Ξ CH + 2NaCl

5) To obtain carbon dioxide (CO2), it is necessary to burn acetylene:

2 C2H2 + 3 О2 → 2 СО2 +2 Н2О
