1) 4Na + O2 = 2Na2O – sodium, as an active metal is oxidized by oxygen;
2) 2Na + O2 = Na2O2 – upon further oxidation of sodium with oxygen, they form peroxide;
3) Na2O + O2 + H2CO3 = Na2CO3 + H2O + O2 – sodium peroxide is unstable and decomposes immediately, therefore, only sodium oxide reacts with carbonic acid.
4) Na2CO3 + 2HCI = 2NaCI + H2O + CO2 – sodium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to form sodium chloride and carbonic acid, which is unstable and decomposes into water and carbon dioxide;
5) NaCI + HNO3 = NaNO3 + HCI – sodium chloride reacts with nitric acid to form sodium nitrate.
