Feudal lords lived in well-equipped castles, which had everything they needed to live with their family, servants and soldiers. The castle was built of stone and was protected by a moat with water and strong walls, there could be several circles of such protective walls. In the castle itself there were living quarters with dining rooms and bedrooms, there were cellars with food supplies. Defensive measures were taken from the walls of the castle in case of being surrounded by the enemy. Usually an underground passage was also built in the castle so that one could escape in case of an unsuccessful defense.
