Eastern civilizations pursued an isolationist policy for almost the entire 19th century. Japan was the first to leave it in 1868. Then the young emperor Mutsuhito (ruled until 1912) moved the capital from Kyoto to Tokyo, abolished the shogunate and began the modernization of the country with an industrial revolution according to the European model, the result is a parliament, a constitution, a relatively strong army and navy ( victories in wars with China in 1895 and with Russia in 1904-05).
China (Qing Empire) – isolation until the turn of the 19th and early 20th centuries. A number of reforms were carried out around 1898 and in 1911 the Xinhai Revolution took place, overthrew the Manchu dynasty, declared a republic.
Korea. Was heavily dependent on the Qing empire. The Chinese language was used in office work. Reforms began at the turn of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the result – in 1910 it became part of Japan until 1945.
Myanmar (Burma) – gradually became a British colony by 1885. Thailand (Siam) – maneuvering between England, France and Germany was able to survive as an independent state. Constitutional monarchy since the 1930s.
