| Zinc in the amount of a substance of 0.1 mol interacts with oxygen. Determine the mass of oxygen that reacts and the mass of zinc oxide formed.
The equation for the reaction of zinc with oxygen:
2Zn + O2 = 2ZnO
According to the reaction equation, 2 mol of Zn reacts with 1 mol of O2 and 2 mol of ZnO are formed, therefore:
v (O2) = v (Zn) / 2 = 0.1 / 2 = 0.05 (mol),
v (ZnO) = v (Zn) = 0.1 (mol).
Thus, the mass of reacting oxygen is:
m (O2) = v (O2) * M (O2) = 0.05 * 32 = 1.6 (g)
and the mass of the resulting zinc oxide:
m (ZnO) = v (ZnO) * M (ZnO) = 0.1 * 81 = 8.1 (g).
